Review Epson Stylus Pro 4900 A2 printer

The Epson 4900 is a newly designed professional A2 printer next to the Epson 4880 is included in the program. Fortunately, it is now possible both blacks simultaneously in the printer installed. This is a major disadvantage of the 4880 solved. At the same time, Epson changed the cartridges. At present the only deliverable capacity 200 ml. The measured ink costs € 0.47 per A4 print. This is a remarkably low value.

Thee ink set

The used ink set called UltraChrome HDR and consists of up to 11 cartridges, which is three more than in 4880. Epson has also added orange and green half black cartridge. Epson is saying a much broader range of colors available. From my own measurements show that the color space with up to 16% increase.

The printer in practice

The 4900 is slightly larger but much heavier than the 4880. The display is bigger and the operation buttons on the printer over the 4880 easier. The paper tray at the front has been redesigned. You need two hands to operate. Use thick paper, you can enter at the front. Very handy is the ability to connect the printer to use as a top loader. Entering or sheet should happen and you need to be careful. Because the printer must first be loaded with paper before you send the print job. What remains is the possibility of printing from roll.

The printer software has become a little clearer. For example, the ICC color a clearer name. In standby mode, the 4900 quite a lot of noise when printing, but the noise level of less than 4880. Printing is now faster, 2 minutes and 45 seconds for an A4 print of the highest quality is certainly good. In 4880 the cost of printing an A3 + print 8 minutes and 30 seconds. That's the 4900 shortened to 5 minutes and 45 seconds.

The display of all colors is almost perfect. Compared to the 2880 and 3880 tested here, these use the same ink set as 4880, some colors appear deeper. Examples of blue, red and brown. Although the black ink would be the same, the density of the 4900 a bit deeper. This difference is not only measured but also very good with the naked eye. In addition, notice that dark areas by drawing a very nice and keep the shades of gray in a gray color and really displayed. The aforementioned ink-paper combination is almost insensitive to bronzing and gloss differential

Of course, even with this Epson in the so-called Advanced Black and White mode monochrome printing. The hue, from cool to warm, making it very precisely determined. In neutral grays show virtually no color casts. The density is deeper than the Epson 2880, 3880 and 4880. Importantly, even between very dark gray and black one difference can be seen. Conclusion

Epson has once again raised the bar in view. The colors are unbelievably displayed and is incredibly deep black. The color space is enlarged and bronzing and gloss differential is virtually non-existent. The ink cost per print is low and the machine is easy to operate. Thus, both blacks now installed in the machine, a big advantage over the Epson 4880. In short, on all fronts, the Epson 4900 just a little better than 4880. The difference in price, about € 500, is quite large.
