PREVIEW NIKKOR Z 50MM F1.2 S

vrouw

When presenting the Z system cameras, Nikon claimed that the large diameter of the lens mount and the short register distance offered its lens designers unprecedented possibilities. The Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct was already a beautiful but expensive example of what is possible with the Z lens mount. The Nikkor Z 50 mm F1.2 S also promises to become an exceptional lens.

DESIGN

With a maximum aperture of F1.2, the NIKKOR Z 50 mm F1.2 S becomes Nikon’s most powerful autofocus lens ever. It uses a symmetrical optical design, which prevents light from being bent or deformed when passing through the lens. According to Nikon, the image that reaches the camera sensor is free of distortion and aberration for real sharpness from edge to edge. The optical formula has three aspherical lens elements to virtually eliminate distortion.

The large aperture of F1.2 allows an extremely low depth of field, so that it is possible to isolate subjects from the background and allows shooting in low light. It creates a circular background blur with a smooth, gradual gradient, so that the sharpness decreases in a very natural way.

Autofocus

The NIKKOR Z 50 mm F1.2 S uses stepper motors (STM) and a multi-focus system, allowing multiple lens elements to move at the same time. The autofocus works quickly and accurately, even for close-ups or with a wide open aperture. Due to the minimal focus breathing (change of field of view when the focus changes), the lens is also suitable for videographers.

The lens includes a focus ring, a customizable control ring and hotkey, and an EL Display panel. Nikon’s Nano Crystal and ARNEO Coating reduce light spots, image shadows and coma to a minimum, so that the lens can also be used with bright backlight. Thanks to the weatherproof seal, it offers maximal conditions tolerance.

IMAGE QUALITY

We have not yet been able to test the NIKKOR Z 50mm F1.2 S ourselves. Of course, we will do so as soon as we have a copy in our lab. It will be launched in October with a target price of €2,499.
